The Future of Wearable Electronic Devices in Healthcare System

Wearable Electronic Devices in Healthcare System

Wearable Electronic Devices

Currently, wearable electronic devices such as smartwatches and activity trackers provide information regarding activity patterns, sleep time, heart rate, and unique insights into our health and well-being. These wearable devices, which allow physiological signals to be continuously monitored in real-time, can be used in the early detection of diseases. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the potential of wearable health devices has become increasingly apparent. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the potential of wearable electronic devices in healthcare.

In the future, this could be augmented with new classes of wearables for monitoring physical parameters and biochemical markers in real-time. These electronic devices could also be used to remotely monitor the recovery of individuals undergoing medical treatment or self-isolating at home. Such emerging low-cost wearable sensing technologies could be used symptomatic and pre-symptomatic cases in future pandemics.

With continued innovation and development, the next-generation of wearable sensors and their ability to continuously monitoring both physical parameters and biochemical markers as mentioned earlier, could play a key role in fighting the next pandemic as well as in the futuristic healthcare system.

Recently, an article “Wearable devices for the detection of COVID-19” by Ates HC et al. (2021) was published in ‘Nature Electronics’.
